Hello. I’m Denise, and I’m here to write from the spaces in between.

I am a lot of in-betweens: Sri Lankan Tamil and Burgher, Australian. Autistic, ADHD, and Bipolar. Living with chronic illness, including neurological disability. These things often intersect in volatile ways — but they can intersect in beautiful ways, too.

This Substack is about the lived experience of intersectionality. Let’s take the concept out of academia and look at its real-world relevance. I want to hear about your in-betweens, and how they sit with you. Is not fitting in good, bad, or somewhere in between?

Follow my neurodivergent brain down this rabbit hole. Do we label, or do we not? Let’s have fun while we figure it out.

Full disclosure: I have no idea what I’m talking about. I’m just like you — living it and navigating it. If I ever sound like I know what I’m talking about, with my big words and big thoughts, remember I’m still working it out.

There are already too many people online pretending to have all the answers. Here, we’ll just mull over the questions together. Welcome to Notes From the In-Between! I hope you enjoy the stories that don’t fit.

I write from the spaces in between, where identities intersect in volatile and beautiful ways. Sri Lankan Tamil & Burgher, Australian, neurodivergent, bipolar, chronically ill and Denise — I share the grit, humour & joy of life outside the box.
